Tallahassee walking tour brochure

Tallahassee visitors and guests find it easier than ever to follow in the footsteps of those who have come before with the new edition of "Touring Tallahassee: A Walking Guide to Historic Downtown." Sharing truths and tidbits, tradition and legend, the 24-page brochure chronicles Tallahassee history as told by 67 of downtown’s venerable buildings and sites – silent eyewitnesses to nearly two centuries of Capital City happenings.

The new edition features a number of additional sites as well as a brand new, easier to navigate map created in partnership with the Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Department. Among the upgrades and enhancements, the accompanying map now designates dining sites along the route, making it more convenient then ever to rest, reload and hit the bricks without missing a step.

Developed as a collaborative effort between the Tallahassee Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (TACVB) and the Tallahassee Trust for Historic Preservation, the brochure divides historic downtown into three districts: Downtown, Park Avenue National Register Historic District and Calhoun Street National Register Historic District. Covering the commercial and political center of the city, the 1.5-mile Downtown tour covers Tallahassee’s history, from Tallahassee’s birth as territorial capital of Florida to modern times. The 1.5-mile Park Avenue tour and the three-quarter-mile Calhoun Street tour trace two of Tallahassee’s oldest residential neighborhoods – both added to the National Register of Historic Districts in 1979 – right back to their roots.

From ornately adorned civic buildings such as the old U.S. Courthouse and the domed Historic Capitol to graciously columned residences such as the Knott House and the Brokaw-McDougall House, "Touring Tallahassee" recounts our collective history through the architecture of our treasured structures and through the halls that once sheltered generations of our most notable residents and leaders.

"Touring Tallahassee: A Walking Guide to Historic Downtown" is available free of charge from the TACVB. Pick up a copy from the Tallahassee Visitor Information Center, located at 106 E. Jefferson St., between 8 am and 5 pm Monday through Friday, or between 9 am and 1 pm on Saturday.
